Sterling silver jewelry usually does not tarnish when it is worn on
a regular basis because our natural body oils slow the tarnishing
process. Remove sterling silver jewelry before cleaning with chemicals, bathing or swimming in pools or salt water. Contact with household cleaners, make-up, bleach, chlorine and salt water all contribute to the tarnishing of sterling silver jewelry. Tarnish is caused by sterling silver interacting with elements such as oxygen and sulfur in an oxidation process. Clean your sterling silver jewelry using a mild dish detergent diluted in water and rinse thoroughly. You may gently use a soft baby tooth brush if needed. Dry your jewelry thoroughly using a jewelry cloth prior to storage. Sterling silver jewelry should be stored in air-tight protective plastic bags. Since the jewelry is scratch resistant and not scratch proof, the protective bag will prevent scratching as well as tarnishing. Avoid storing sterling silver jewelry in the open air or exposing it to dampness and direct sunlight. |
